Assalamualaikum...

This week Miss Zu taught us on how to write a good Introductory Paragraph. As we know, whatever things or person at the in front are important. Same for the introductory paragraphIt supplies background information needed to understand the essay hence to attract readers attentionIt also presents a thesis statement, the main idea of the essay, usually towards the end of the introduction plus to indicates a plan of the essay’s development (optional) and set the tone for the rest of the essay

Basically, there are three parts of the introductory paragraph that are :

  •  The Hook - is designed to grab attention immediately and give some indication about the essay’s topic
  •  The Transition - moves the reader from the hook to the driving force of the essay
  •  The Thesis Statement - that can makes the contract with the reader about what will be discussed without a blatant announcement

For your information, there are sum of 8 hooks that you can use in your writing. Usually, we will only choose 3 hook out of the total. The 8 hooks are :
  1.  Begins with a broad, general statement of your topic and narrow down to your thesis statement / Funnel.
  2. Using Facts or Statistics
  3. Start with an idea or situation that is the opposite of the one you want to develop / Contrast to the thesis statement /turnabout.
  4. Explain the importance of your topic to the reader / Use Current Events.
  5. Use an incident or brief story or Personal Examples / Observations.
  6. Ask rhetorical questions
  7. Use a quotation
  8. Using definition.

Lastly, I provide an exercise to practice your knowledge. http://www.slideshare.net/tmeade94/introductory-paragraph-exercises
